Cricket Colombia is proud to support and promote youth cricket across the country. From the Caribbean coast to the Andean highlands, several junior development programmes are nurturing the next generation of Colombian cricketers.
The most substantial youth programme is led by the El Rio Foundation, a community-driven charity based near Santa Marta. Through their multi-sport outreach, El Rio has introduced over 600 children to cricket. Today, 30 children (12 girls and 18 boys) train weekly at two dedicated cricket clubs—proof of cricket’s growing popularity and impact in the region.
Colombia’s passion for youth cricket runs deep. As far back as the 1970s, junior cricket was active through the Bogotá Sports Club, which had a mixed junior section that helped build the foundation of the sport in the capital. Over the last two decades, expat-led and local initiatives have sparked youth cricket programmes in Bogotá, Cali, and Barranquilla. While early efforts were often limited by the lack of formal recognition of cricket as a sport, the recent approval from Colombia’s Sports Ministry has opened new doors. Schools across the country now have the opportunity to officially introduce cricket in physical education classes and after-school programmes.
Our junior programmes are already producing remarkable talent:
– Kevin Martinez, a product of the Cali academy, represented Colombia at the South American Cricket Championship (SACC) in 2017 and continues to play for Cali Cricket Club.
– John Paul Wood debuted for the national team at just 13 years old and made headlines in 2023 and 2024 with match-winning performances at the SACC.
– Bilverto Pulgarin, from Barranquilla, came through his local club’s youth system and debuted for the national team at age 18.
These stories reflect the power of grassroots development—and they’re just the beginning.
Youth development is a core pillar of Cricket Colombia’s long-term strategy. Our goal is to expand junior cricket into schools and communities nationwide, creating more pathways for young Colombians to learn, compete, and grow through cricket. With ICC affiliation on the horizon and support from the Sports Ministry, we aim to appoint a full-time development officer who will lead school-based programmes, support community initiatives like El Rio Foundation, and expand cricket’s reach to even more children and families across Colombia.
Whether you’re a school administrator, coach, parent, or young player, we invite you to be part of this movement. Together, we can build a vibrant and inclusive future for cricket in Colombia—starting with the next generation.
